Scalp Micropigmentation in Philadelphia, PA

At LUMEN, we offer a variety of hair restoration procedures from FUE hair transplants to platelet-rich plasma injections to supplements to support hair growth. But is a hair transplant the only option if you want to wear your hair short and give the illusion of thickness? Or, do you desire a fuller look after your hair transplant surgery? Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) is an increasingly popular solution in the realm of non-surgical hair treatments. We’re pleased to offer it as part of our full complement of hair restoration treatments and partner with Topline SMP to help camouflage the hair loss you are experiencing.

How Scalp Micropigmentation Works

The SMP process is similar to getting a cosmetic tattoo. Our experts use microneedles to create impressions on the scalp. Next, they inject pigment into the dermal layer of the scalp to give you an illusion of the appearance of hair follicles. SMP is ideal for anyone who wears a short haircut and can look as fine as a 5 o’clock shadow. Scalp micropigmentation can be performed as a standalone procedure or a complement to a hair transplant.

Benefits of Scalp Micropigmentation

Scalp Micropigmentation offers men and women several benefits, including:

Candidates for SMP

You may be a good candidate for SMP if you:

SMP with a Hair Transplant

It may come as a surprise, but scalp micropigmentation is often very complementary to a hair transplant and can provide excellent results. Depending on the size of your donor area, a hair transplant surgeon may only be able to transplant a certain amount of hair follicles. For this reason, a hair transplant may not provide the desired density, or there may be an area of the scalp we can’t treat with a hair transplant alone. SMP with a follicular unit extraction (FUE) hair transplant provides the best of both worlds. A hair transplant provides the feel and texture of real hair, and SMP has the added benefit of enhancing the look of thickness and density. In most cases, we would complete the hair transplant first, and then it could be followed by SMP 3-6 months later.

Scalp Micropigmentation Before & After Frequently Asked Questions

Everyone’s pain tolerance is different, but most patients can tolerate SMP without the need for topical anesthetics. However, an anesthetic is always available to maximize your comfort.

Redness and swelling can occur on the day of the procedure, and these side effects are usually resolved by the next day.

Most patients will be able to return to work and their daily routine the next day with minor restrictions.

When done correctly by a trained professional, SMP should be nearly undetectable. Most people report that no one ever questions if they had work done. Many people will assume you merely decided to cut your hair shorter.

Typically, 2-4 sessions are needed to achieve a realistic, naturally dense look. This approach also gives you the power to control your look. For example, if you want your hairline lower than you initially asked for, it can be done in the second or third session.

SMP typically lasts 3-5 years, and then a maintenance session is required to maintain the results.

Absolutely! Replicated hair follicles are implanted into the scalp to fill in thinning areas and make the hair look thicker and the scalp a lot less noticeable.

The SMP sessions can either be performed at The Lumen Center in Bryn Mawr, PA, or at Topline SMP’s office in Cherry Hill, NJ.
