Hair Loss in Women, Philadelphia, PA

Are you noticing thinning hair on the top of your head or a widening part? Hiding it with a hat or rearranging your hair to make it less obvious? You are certainly not alone, and hair loss is more common in women than you may think. An estimated 21 million women in the United States experience hair loss, impacting 40% of women by age 40.

We’re here to tell you it is possible to regain fuller, thicker, and healthy hair! At Lumen, we offer the innovative NeoGraft® System, an FUE Hair Transplant procedure. Results are undetectable and completely natural. We also offer other hair restoration solutions to help you fill in those sparse or balding patches and areas of thinning hair, including Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) and Nanofat therapies.

Causes of Hair Loss in Women

Female pattern alopecia, also known as androgenic alopecia, is the most common type of hair loss in women. Medical conditions, such as thyroid disease and vitamin deficiencies, can also cause hair loss. Hair loss typically occurs during or after menopause when a woman is in her 50s, but it can also happen much earlier. Women with hormonal changes related to pregnancy or perimenopause may also struggle with thinning hair. While there may be many changes due to aging and hormones, hair loss doesn’t have to be one of them.

What Is Female Pattern Hair Loss?

Female pattern baldness is caused by an inherited sensitivity to the effects of androgens (male hormones) on scalp hair follicles. While male pattern baldness typically follows a predictable pattern, female pattern alopecia presents in various ways. Often, thinning hair in women happens all over the scalp, but with more noticeable thinning in certain areas. It tends to occur toward the top of the scalp, with parts growing wider.

Another characteristic of androgenetic alopecia is miniaturization. This condition occurs when thinning hair does not uniformly grow smaller in diameter. Women with hair loss tend to have miniaturizing hairs with various diameters in the affected areas of the scalp.

Hair Plugs for Women: A Thing of the Past

Fortunately, hair transplants for women have come a long way since hair plugs! Hair plugs (a single hair graft consisting of 8-20 hairs) were incredibly noticeable and unnatural-looking. Today, innovative hair loss treatments such as the NeoGraft System produce undetectable results that mimic your natural hairline.

Below is a step-by-step guide of what you can expect from a hair transplant procedure at The Lumen Center.

  1. A Comprehensive Consultation. Dr. Andrew Kwak, founder of The Lumen Center, will conduct a thorough medical history and ask several questions about the progression of your hair loss. He will perform a detailed hair and scalp analysis and may order blood tests to identify the underlying hair loss condition. Dr. Kwak will take all of the facts into account to determine the ideal course of treatment, surgical or non-surgical. If a hair transplant is needed, we’ll walk you through how to prepare for your procedure and post-operative care.
  2. The Day of Your NeoGraft Procedure – Preparing the Recipient and Donor Areas. Using a local anesthetic, Dr. Kwak will numb your scalp before the hair extraction begins and again before the grafting or implantation occurs, so your hair transplant is as comfortable and pain-free as possible.
  3. Extraction of the Hair Follicles. Using gentle suction and rotation, the NeoGraft technology removes individual hair follicles from a donor site on the back of the head. The extraction of follicles is spaced appropriately so that the back of your head retains a healthy, thick look. We choose the most healthy, viable follicles for transplantation to the thinning or balding area, which are more likely to survive in a new area.
  4. Implanting the Donor Hair. After the donor hair grafts are separated, we prepare the recipient site for the donor hair grafts to be implanted where you need them. The extracted follicles are then carefully implanted in the thinning or balding areas for a fuller head of hair. NeoGraft utilizes an automated handpiece, which gives patients little to no discomfort during the hair transplant procedure.
  5. Post-Operative Care. The hair follicles are now ready to thrive in their new location. We’ll give you detailed instructions to care for your new hair grafts over the following weeks. After approximately 4-5 days, the hair follicles will begin to shed. Not to worry – this is a normal and expected part of the hair growth process. Approximately 4-6 months after your NeoGraft hair restoration procedure, the hair regenerates, and you will begin producing normal, healthy strands of hair.

Candidates for NeoGraft Female Hair Transplant Surgery

women's hair transplant

Many women can benefit from the NeoGraft hair transplant procedure. NeoGraft is ideal for women who suffer from female pattern baldness and have unaffected areas from hair loss. Women who have patches of thinning hair or bald spots may benefit from this hair restoration surgery. NeoGraft is an especially good option for women who wear their hair longer. Since small areas will need to be shaved on the back of the head for harvesting the donor hair, it will be easy to cover existing hair while the transplanted hair grows back.

Female patients who experience hair loss evenly all of their heads may not be good candidates for a hair transplant because high-quality donor areas are needed for transplanted hair and may not be available. NeoGraft® is not a solution for hair loss due to stress, health conditions, medications, or other temporary causes.

Does a Female Hair Transplant Surgery Yield Successful Results?

Yes, in the hands of a skilled surgeon and technician, a woman’s hair transplant is a very effective and permanent solution. A growing number of women are opting for hair transplants to combat permanent hair loss. In addition, female hair restoration research suggests that hair transplantation is effective in treating female hair loss. View our hair restoration gallery for before and after images and results of hair transplant patients.

Other Hair Loss Solutions

The following hair restoration procedures are non-surgical and may be recommended as a standalone treatment or added to a hair transplant procedure to help retain existing hair and improve the success of the implanted hair follicles.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) for Hair Loss

Platelet-rich plasma is proving to be increasingly effective in treating female-pattern hair loss. Numerous studies have shown it reduces hair loss, thickens hair, and increases hair density. PRP is a concentration of platelets in your own blood that contains regenerative growth factors. When used for hair loss, PRP releases these growth factors into the scalp to stimulate new natural hair growth and increase tissue repair to weak or damaged hair follicles.

Nanofat for Hair Rejuvenation

Nanofat for hair regrowth (also called Autologous Lipocyte Micronized Injection or ALMI) is a revolutionary new procedure that uses your body’s regenerative growth factors in fat tissue to revive hair follicles. During the nanofat procedure, a small amount of fat is harvested from the love handles and then processed to separate fluids and produce a highly potent concentration of adipose-derived stem cells. Once the treatment area is numbed, the nanofat is precisely injected into the scalp. Nanofat not only strengthens weakened hair follicles but is also proven to assist with hair regrowth. This procedure produces long-lasting results with maintenance treatments every 2-3 years. Interval PRP treatments help maximize natural growth and stimulate new hair production.
