What is Liposuction?

Liposuction is a cosmetic surgery procedure that removes stubborn fat deposits from specific areas of the body to create smoother, more balanced contours. While not a weight loss method, the fat removed is permanently eliminated. At The Lumen Center, Dr Kwak who has 20 plus years experience performs the procedure.

Liposuction is ideal for individuals who are close to their goal weight but struggle with localized fat that doesn’t respond to diet or exercise. Common treatment areas include the abdomen, thighs, hips, arms, back, and chin, though the procedure can be customized to nearly any body area.

Liposuction Cost

In Philadelphia, the average cost of high-definition liposuction typically on average ranges from about  $3,000 to $6,500 per treatment area, which aligns with national averages reported by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.

The total cost can vary depending on several factors, including the specific liposuction technique used, the number of areas treated, and the complexity of the procedure.

During your personalized consultation with our Philadelphia liposuction specialist, we will review your goals, recommend the most appropriate body contouring approach, and provide a comprehensive, itemized estimate of your treatment costs. Our goal is to help you make an informed, confident decision about your procedure—balancing your aesthetic vision with your budget and expectations.

What Areas of The Body Can Liposuction Treat?

Liposuction is a versatile procedure that can be used to target and sculpt various areas of the body, providing a more toned and contoured appearance. Some of the most popular areas treated with liposuction include:

Abdomen

The abdomen is one of the most common areas for liposuction, especially for those with stubborn fat that doesn’t respond to diet and exercise. Whether it’s the upper or lower abdomen, liposuction can help create a flatter, more defined midsection.

Love Handles (Flanks)

Often referred to as “love handles,” the flanks are a common area for fat accumulation. Liposuction can effectively eliminate excess fat from the sides of the waist, resulting in a slimmer, more sculpted silhouette.

Arms

Liposuction can help reshape and contour the arms, particularly for individuals who struggle with excess fat in the upper arms or underarms. This can create a more toned, defined appearance, helping you feel more confident in sleeveless clothing.

Back

Excess fat in the back, including the bra line or lower back, can be difficult to target through traditional methods. Liposuction can address these areas, providing a smoother and more streamlined back for a balanced body shape.

Thighs

Liposuction can target both the inner and outer thighs, helping to reduce unwanted fat deposits and create a more proportionate, toned appearance. This is especially helpful for individuals struggling with fat that resists exercise and diet.

Chin and Neck

Fat under the chin or along the neck can contribute to a “double chin” or less defined jawline. Liposuction can remove this fat, providing a more sculpted and youthful-looking profile, enhancing the overall facial appearance.

Liposuction is a highly effective way to contour and reshape these areas, offering both immediate and long-lasting results. During your consultation, Dr. Kwak will assess your body goals and recommend a customized treatment plan tailored to your specific needs.

What to Expect During the Procedure

The procedure completely avoids surgery. Only small nicks (“freckle indents”) in the skin (no stitches) and a tiny injection cannula are needed. Local anesthesia is administered, similar to what is provided at a dentist office. Recovery time is fairly short with most patients back to work after 3-4 days.

Depending on the number and size of the areas, the procedure lasts approximately three hours and steps include:

Consultation process

Our liposuction procedure begins with a consultation. Dr Kwak will assess your suitability for liposuction, discuss your goals, and explain how liposuction works. He will outline the differences, potential risks, and expected outcomes for both methods.

Pre Op

Before surgery, you might be advised to adjust or halt certain medications and to stop smoking to enhance healing. Pre-operative images are often taken for later comparison to post-operative results.

Anesthesia

The area to be treated is infused with a saline solution containing a local anesthetic. (elaborate)

The Incision

a very small 3-5mm incision is made in the skin. (elaborate)

Excess Fat Removal

A tiny cannula (tube) delivers a precise stream of energy underneath the skin and directly into the fat cells. This causes the fat cells to burst, and the fat is gently suctioned out of the body. Heat from the device results in less bleeding, swelling, and bruising. It causes you to heal faster, and there are no stitches.

Closing the Entry Points

Once the desired amount of fat has been removed, the incisions may be stitched closed, depending on the specific circumstances and surgeon’s practice.

Recovery Timeline and Aftercare

At The Lumen Center, we guide every patient through a personalized recovery plan after liposuction to ensure safe healing, comfort, and optimal results. Here’s what you can expect during each stage of your recovery.

Day One

Immediately after your procedure, mild swelling, bruising, and fluid drainage are normal. You’ll wear a compression garment to minimize swelling and support your new contours. Most patients are able to walk the same day, and our team provides detailed post-operative instructions to promote proper healing and comfort.

Week One

During the first week, soreness and tightness may persist, but discomfort typically improves each day. Continue wearing your compression garment as directed and avoid strenuous activity. Light walking is encouraged to maintain circulation and reduce the risk of clotting. Follow-up appointments at [Your Clinic Name] help us monitor your progress closely.

Weeks Two to Four

Swelling and bruising gradually subside, and many patients return to work and light exercise after two weeks. Your results will begin to take shape, though final contours may take longer to fully refine. Our team remains available to answer any questions and adjust your care plan as needed for a smooth recovery.

After One Month

By the one-month mark, most swelling has resolved, and your improved body shape becomes more noticeable. Patients can typically resume full activity, including exercise. Continued use of your compression garment may still be recommended to enhance contour definition and skin tightening. Final results often appear within three to six months, revealing a slimmer, more sculpted look.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Liposuction

At The Lumen Center, Dr Kwak carefully evaluates each patient to determine if liposuction is the right procedure to achieve their aesthetic goals safely. Ideal candidates are typically in good health and looking to refine body contours in targeted areas rather than lose significant weight. Below are the key characteristics we consider during your consultation.

Health Status

Candidates should be in overall good physical health without medical conditions that could impair healing or increase surgical risks. A healthy immune system supports proper recovery, reduces the likelihood of complications, and ensures that your body responds well to the procedure. Our surgeons perform a thorough medical review to confirm you’re ready for surgery.

Symmetry Concerns

Liposuction can be an excellent option for individuals seeking to improve body balance and proportion. Whether it’s addressing uneven fat deposits on the abdomen, thighs, arms, or flanks, liposuction helps create more symmetrical, natural-looking contours. During your consultation, we evaluate your body shape to design a customized treatment plan that enhances your overall symmetry.

Skin Elasticity

Good skin elasticity is essential for smooth, even results after liposuction. Patients with firm, resilient skin typically experience better contour definition as their skin adapts to new body shapes. If skin laxity is a concern, our team may recommend complementary treatments, such as skin tightening or body lift procedures, to achieve the best outcome.

Body Weight

The best candidates for liposuction are close to their ideal body weight—typically within 20 to 30 pounds. Liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure; it’s designed to remove isolated fat pockets that don’t respond to diet and exercise. Maintaining a stable weight before and after surgery helps preserve your results and ensures long-lasting contour improvement.

Realistic Expectations

It’s important to understand what liposuction can and cannot achieve. The procedure enhances shape and proportion but won’t drastically change body type or eliminate cellulite. Our surgeons take time to explain expected outcomes and ensure you have a clear, realistic understanding of your potential results, leading to greater satisfaction post-surgery.

Don’t Smoke

Non-smokers heal faster and with fewer complications. Smoking can reduce blood flow, delay recovery, and increase the risk of infection. If you smoke, our surgeons will advise you to quit several weeks before and after surgery to ensure the safest possible healing and optimal results.

Personalized Assessment

Every patient’s goals and anatomy are unique. During your private consultation at [Your Clinic Name], our experienced surgical team will discuss your concerns, assess your suitability for liposuction, and create a customized treatment plan to help you achieve balanced, natural results with confidence.

Body Contouring with Lipo 360 and Lipo 360 BBL

One of our most popular procedures is Lipo 360, a comprehensive liposuction technique that sculpts and contours the entire midsection—including the abdomen, flanks (love handles), and lower back.

Unlike traditional liposuction, which targets isolated areas, Lipo 360 enhances the body’s natural proportions by creating a smooth, balanced, and more defined silhouette.

For those seeking enhanced curves and volume, Lipo 360 BBL (Brazilian Butt Lift) offers the perfect combination of body contouring and fat transfer. Fat is removed through Lipo 360 is purified and strategically injected into the buttocks to create a fuller, rounder shape.

This approach not only enhances the appearance of the buttocks but also further slims the waist, accentuating an hourglass figure.

Risks, Safety, and Complications of Liposuction

Patient safety is our top priority. Liposuction is a well-established and safe procedure when performed by an experienced, board-certified plastic surgeon. However, as with any surgical treatment, it carries potential risks and requires proper post-operative care to ensure the best outcome.

Common Side Effects

Mild swelling, bruising, and temporary numbness are normal after liposuction. These effects usually subside within a few weeks as your body heals and your results begin to take shape. Wearing your compression garment and following your surgeon’s aftercare instructions are essential for reducing discomfort and speeding recovery.

Possible Complications

While rare, potential complications can include infection, fluid accumulation (seroma), contour irregularities, or changes in skin sensation. These risks are minimized when the procedure is performed in an accredited surgical facility by a qualified surgeon who uses advanced techniques and proper safety protocols.

Our Commitment to Safety

At The Lumen Center, all liposuction procedures are performed by Dr Kwak using state-of-the-art equipment and sterile techniques. Every patient undergoes a detailed pre-surgical assessment to ensure they are medically fit for surgery. Our team provides personalized aftercare guidance and close follow-up to support safe healing and long-term results.

When to Contact Your Surgeon

If you experience unusual pain, persistent swelling, or any signs of infection after surgery, it’s important to contact your surgical team promptly. Early attention helps ensure a smooth recovery and the best possible aesthetic outcome.

Frequently Asked Questions

Many patients enjoy lasting improvements for a decade or longer, provided they maintain their results through consistent self-care and healthy lifestyle. Once fat cells are removed during the procedure, they do not grow back; however, remaining fat cells can still enlarge with weight gain. At The Lumen Center we emphasize that maintaining a stable weight through balanced nutrition and regular exercise helps preserve your slimmer, more sculpted contours for years to come.

Liposuction isn’t right for everyone. You may not be a good candidate if you have serious medical conditions, poor skin elasticity, or are looking for a weight-loss solution rather than body contouring. People who smoke, are pregnant, or have unrealistic expectations should also avoid the procedure. Dr Kwak will evaluate your health and goals to ensure liposuction is safe and appropriate for you.

Liposuction is not a weight-loss procedure — it’s designed to remove stubborn fat deposits and contour specific areas of the body. While you may notice a slight change on the scale, the main benefit is improved shape and proportion, not overall weight reduction. At The Lumen Center, we focus on achieving natural, balanced results that enhance your existing body shape rather than replacing a healthy lifestyle.

The amount of fat that can be safely removed during liposuction varies by patient, but most board-certified surgeons recommend a limit of up to five liters (about 10 pounds) per session. Removing too much fat at once can increase risks and affect body balance.

Dr. Andrew Kwak, founder of The Lumen Center, will provide a full initial consultation to discuss your goals and vision to achieve the best results possible, and create a customized treatment plan. After reviewing your medical history, he will examine you, discuss expectations and how the Liposuction technology works. You will receive detailed instructions on how to prepare for your procedure and what to expect during and after the treatment at our Bryn Mawr (near Philadelphia) location.

The treatment is performed as an outpatient procedure in The Lumen Center office in Bryn Mawr, PA (near Philadelphia).

Liposuction can remove up to 5 liters of fat in a single session. You can expect that up to 90% of the subcutaneous (“pinchable”) fat in the treatment area will be removed.

You may start to see results within 1 week. Full results are expected within 4-6 months when the skin reaches optimal tightening.
